GR-EP-52 High Torque Planetary Gearmotor (12V and 24V versions)


The GR-EP-52 is mid-powered DC motor and planetary (epicyclic) gearbox combination, available with three gearbox options. First is a low-reduction high-speed 13.7:1 gearbox, then a mid-range 71.2:1 gearbox, and finally a high-reduction low-speed 369:1 gearbox. 

Each gearmotor assembly is 52mm in diameter while overall lengths are approximately 162mm for the 13.7:1 gearbox, 174mm for the 71.2:1 gearbox and 185mm for the 369:1 gearbox. The output shaft is 12mm in diameter with a 'D' flat 15mm along from the end, 2mm in depth, upon which an attached load can be transferred.

Two motor versions are available, 12V and 24V DC (see the options drop-down for all possibile permutations). Operating characteristics are given for a range of gearbox and motor combinations under the 'technical details' tab below.

This model of gearmotor is a larger alternative to our GR-EP-45E model. It is able to offer increased continuous power output and a sturdier transmission, perfect for applications where longevity at higher torque levels is required. The motor itself (before the gearbox) rotates at a relatively slow speed, generating lower noise levels than some other motors of a similar power output. Some typical applications would include operating powered turntables, materials processing equipment, electric windows, and other automated appliances.

The 13.7:1 gearbox option provides a higher speed but lower torque output (219rpm no-load at 12V), the 71.2:1 option compromises between torque and speed (42rpm no-load), while the 369:1 sacrifices speed for a very high torque output (8.1rpm no-load). More operating details are available under Technical Details below. If you intend to operate the motor with a continuous load do not exceed the continuous torque ratings described for the different gearbox options, running at a higher torque than these ratings for extended periods of time could lead the motor to overheat.

The maximum allowable torque through the gearbox for any of the ratio options is 350kg-cm (34Nm) beyond which the gears may be damaged, be sure to fit either current limiting or output load limiting hardware if there is a danger that your application may try to exceed this load. 

Each motor is supplied by default with two leads, one red and one black, running ~250mm from the motor. The option (selectable below) is offered to change the leads to two 1000mm long 1mm2 silicone-insulated cables. Allow for one extra working day to process your order if a modified lead option is added, since these options are added to-order.


User advice

This motor operates like any other DC motor and so may be used at voltages other than the nominal 12V or 24V (depending on your selected option) with changed operating characteristics (please be aware that the warranty does not cover operation above each nominal rated voltage, which is likely to shorten the lifespan). Reducing the voltage reaching the motor will decrease the output speed and current for a given load, while increasing the voltage will increase the speed and the current. To change the direction of rotation swap the polarity of the power to the motor contacts (invert positive and negative). The motor is neutrally timed and so will travel at approximately the same speed in both directions.

It is recommended to 'break-in' a new motor and gearbox before use, this is done by running for 3-4 minutes continuously in both directions (polarity one way then the other) under no load. This ensures that all of the gears and bearings are running freely before being subjected to loading.
